I spent this last weekend at the Transcending Boundaries Conference, www.transcendingboundaries.com, as presenter, attendee, and occasional chaplain. This event has quickly become one of my favorites, with wonderful speakers and discussions that gave me so much to think about. There is also something so powerful in getting to meet so many wonderful activists and writers and care-givers and other folks who are exploring all aspects of sexuality. Wrap it all up in a weekend with so many people who are interested in talking about the spiritual aspects of sexuality and gender and love, and are exploring those questions in so many different ways and in so many different faith traditions, and it all led to a wonderful weekend.
The weekend brought up many interesting questions I hope to explore on these pages in coming days. But for now I just wanted to give love to the conference- to thank all the wonderful people who do so much to make it happen, and to strongly encourage anyone who is interested in these issues to attend next year.
Sunday morning, I worked with a pagan and a Jewish spiritual leader to co-lead an interfaith worship service, where we celebrated the beauty that is in each of us. We ended by singing “this little light of mine” and changing it to “this great big light of mine.” Hearing so many joyful voices singing, in celebration of the idea that we are all beautifully made by the Divine, and no one can put barriers on our sexuality, our gender, or on how we love each other, brought tears to my eyes.
